‘If you like a lot of jokes, this show is for you’, Gary Delaney set to open CH1 Chester Comedy Festival

Comedian, Gary Delaney is set to return to the stage at the CH1 Chester Comedy Festival this June, following a smash hit performance in 2018

Cheshire-based comedian, Gary Delaney, is looking forward to returning to “one of his favourite places to gig”, as he prepares to take centre stage at the second CH1 Chester Comedy Festival this summer.

Gary, a double Sony Award Winner, Chortle Award Nominee and regular on Mock The Week, will be performing at Chester Town Hall on June 30, as part of his ongoing tour, Gagster’s Paradise.

The comic says that Chester holds a lot of fond memories from throughout his career. From starting out in pubs many years ago, to headlining his own shows, he ‘thanks the people of Chester for their good taste.’ Now based in Cheshire, Gary previewed his 2019 tour in Chester, where he felt a sense of ‘relief’ after being well received.

“The best gigs are with crowds who get a clever joke but they’re also not too up their own backsides to laugh at something much naughtier. Then you have free reign over your material and more variety to your show, and that’s why I love the crowds in Chester.”

Organised by CH1ChesterBID, the eight-day festival will see twenty-six acclaimed comedians take to the stage in sixteen of Chester’s most prestigious venues. Taking place between Sunday, June 30, and Sunday, July 7, the festival features stand-up shows, comedy specials and a free film screening event for children at The Grosvenor Museum.

Speaking of his upcoming tour, Gary said: “Chester was where I did one of the previews for this tour. It was the gig where it really clicked, and I thought ‘this is going to be a good show’. Up until then it was all just scribbled notes and blind optimism. It was such a relief.”

Gagster’s Paradise has showcased throughout the UK since May, and due to demand, the king of the one-liners has recently added a host of new dates, running through until October 2019.

Gary continued: “I wanted the title of the show to let people know it had loads of jokes in, there’s no story, no sad bits, you’re definitely not going to learn anything, but if you like lots of jokes it’s for you.

“I thought it was quite a clever title, but quite a few times I’ve turned up at venues and seen that my poster in the lobby has been graffitied to say ‘Ginster’s Paradise’. I’ll be honest they do have a point though; I should lose a few pounds.”

Gary Delaney, ‘Gagster’s Paradise’ will be at the Chester Town Hall on Sunday, 30 June, 2019. Tickets are priced at £16.50. For more information on the CH1 Chester Comedy Festival or to purchase tickets, visit: www.ch1chestercomedyfestival.com
